Character Languages List

Post by Psilax »

Please read this thread carefully before posting.

This is the official Character Languages List of the Vast. The purpose of this thread will be two things. First of all, it will function as a hard list of all the languages each character in the Vast knows, both Automatic languages and Bonus ones. Second, it will help to clarify things for those who are unsure about how languages work. The sharing of this knowledge will potentially be very helpful to both the DM's and the community, and will help people further flesh out their Character concepts.

First of all, see this thread in order to understand how bonus languages actually work, and also what automatic languages your character gets due to race/class. Basically, your character is able to learn a number of bonus languages equal to their Intelligence score BONUS, that is to say, a character with an Intelligence of 14 (+2) recieves 2 bonus languages. Please note that characters who have negative Intelligence scores actually lose languages from their automatic language list.

Note about Elven: Only Elves of pure blood are able to speak the Elven language fluidly and without error. Half-Elves speak the Elven tongue in a slightly clumsy manner, and Humans or other races who learn the tongue sound awkward and childlike speaking it. This is only detectable by other Elves however, if a Half-Elf and Human communicate in Elven, they will likely not be able to notice anything unusual. Humans and other races will never be able to fluently speak in Elven, for any reason.

Second note: Languages have dialects, but a dialect is just a dialect, and not a seperate language. For example, [Wild Elven] is a dialect of the Elven tongue, any Elf who speaks Elven will be able to freely communicate with Elves who speak with a Wild Elven dialect, but that Elf will not speak with a Wild Elven dialect himself (unless he chooses to and is able to for some valid storyline reason). One real world example of this would be the various dialects of the English language. The English that's spoken in England is different from that of Toronto or New York, and those in turn are different from the American southern dialect. But they can all understand one another and communicate (in most cases). It has also been decided that only Elves or Half-Elves will be able to properly understand the lesser known dialects of any language (such as the Wild varieties).

Third note: Characters with a negative INT score will lose languages from their automatic list depending on the negative score (8 INT is -1 score, so you lose 1 language, 6 INT is -2 score, so you lose 2 languages). However, the DM team has decided that every character will know a minimum of 1 language. So even Half-Orcs with 6 INT will be able to choose either Common or Orc to speak (albeit very, very badly).

Fourth Note: Please consult the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting sourcebook (or the Language and Literacy thread under Humans) for a list of regional languages. Please note that these languages are all Human variants of the Common tongue, and no region offers Elven, Dwarven or any other different race languages as a regional choice. Any Human character wishing to exchange their regional language for a bonus language is free to do so. Some non-human races may have the human language of their home region as an automatic language in addition to their racial language and Common.

Final Note: The DM team has decided to use the "Appraise" skill to represent the PnP "Speak Language" skill. Characters wishing to learn additional languages beyond that of their INT bonus languages may take ranks in the Appraise skill to represent a new language learned. Every 1 rank in the Appraise skill will represent 1 language. Note however, that any bonus ranks in the Appraise skill due to your INT modifier do not count toward extra languages. A Player must literally place a rank in the skill to learn a language.

This thread will be limited to one post per Player ID. This will not be a place to ask questions or carry on conversations, even on topic ones. There is a separate thread in the GD forum that will be created for the purpose of questions/conversations on this topic. A typical entry in this thread will look like this.

In-game PlayerID: RedWiz45

Character name: Korgan Bloodaxe

Race: Dwarf
INT: 14
Speak Language Skill: 0
Languages: Common, Dwarven, Orc, Goblin
Character name: John Mord

Race: Human
INT: 10
Speak Language Skill: 1
Languages: Common, Home Region (Chondathan), Gnoll

Character name: Vhoori Nimesin

Race: Moon Elf
INT: 10
Speak Language Skill: 0
Class: Druid
Languages: Common, Elven, Druidic

Character name: Obould

Race: Half-Orc
INT: 6
Speak Language Skill: 0
Languages: Common

That's it.

Please give this some thought before posting here, because I will be recording and storing all the information in this thread on a regular basis. This is to avoid people changing their minds far down the road after having used a certain language for a long time that they want something else instead. Alterations of existing languages will generally not be allowed, but if you have a very good reason for a change, PM me about it and we'll see.

This thread will be a great reference point for us, the DM's. It will aid us in getting your character involved more deeply in quests by letting us know about and plan for different language interactions. It will also be an interesting resource for the community itself, letting people know (must be kept OOC until learned IC) what languages someone else knows and keeping people honest about their INT scores.

If you have any questions, post them in the Role-Players' Corner "Language Questions" sticky thread.

Even though I'm not going to be playing Milton for a while yet, I reckon I might as well post what languages he can speak anyway:

In-game PlayerID: theultramoose
Character name: Milton Friday
Race: Human
INT: 14
Speak Language Skill: 0
Languages: Common, Home Region (Chondathan), Elven, Damaran (I thought he only knew 3 languages when I made the character so I'm planning to have him learn Damaran during his current stay in Phlan to take up his last language slot)
