OMG... I remember that. Pera was talking mad smack to this merchant guy about how she could handle a simple walk to vespers on her own. She got paid pretty nicely for that escort job, but due to Amir's untimely demise donated most of it to the Tymoran temple.
Oh yeah, he was evil too (the merchant).
Perhaps one side benefit of playing a half-orc... I haven't had much trouble with wanna-be love interests.
But back to the point...
As in a RL relationship, communication is the key. Whether to build on the relationship, or try to dismantle it.

Don't be afraid to simply tell the other player (OOC is clearest) you are not interested. Or that you would perhaps be interested in it after the characters got to know each other IG for a while, and RPed letting it build, but that you think they are being OOC in how fast they are moving. Or simply telling them that you don't like pink-hair. Regardless, you need to make sure you are both on the same page.
I agree with Randy, but think it's even more important to communicate clearly IG. In RL you can read body language and contextual clues to aid your understanding of what is going on. With the time constraints and delays associated with text messaging in the game, mistundertandings about even the simpliest of things are common. I can only imagine that role playing that type of relationship would be even more difficult. Very rewarding perhaps, but the potential for so many problems make it very hard to pull off.

On the plus side, it did improve my emoting style. Well, I suppose that's up for debate but I think it did. I found myself trying to emote all of my character's actions infinitely more clearly. This was to prevent misunderstandings like Reason mentioned.

So, some good did come from my situation.

I'm not against romances for players. As long as it doesn't take over the stage, or isolate the characters from the community too much. I still think that it should be approached carefully though, like any real relationship. Like others have said, make sure you know that character fairly well before hand.

I agree that it would add an element to the roleplaying and I wondered the same thing about why I hadn't seen any relationships in the Vast. I think the points of caution, though, make a lot of sense and would far rather see the community underplay it rather than over play it.

I also would hope that such things would play out slowly over a long time--and with great maturity.

IMO, roleplaying is acting, not vicarious living.
*shrugs* I think plenty of good points have been made, both in favor as well as against the whole love-interest issue. The one thing one should bear in mind, is that any two players involved choose to go for it. And trust them to have talked it through and through OOC as well. I think the only couple I've seen on the Vast where Sehnae and Cairstho, and from the few times seeing them it struck me as totally normal and logical. There have been the number of 'eager' women that would try to couple themselves to higher level characters, yes, but they never lasted that long, fortunately.
Thinking about the issue a bit more as of late, I think the enviroment on this server isn't 'inviting' to have more character relations. Why? Simple, the housing. On other servers I detected a surge in relationships when the characters could buy themselves a home. *shrugs* Logical, I think. Downside being, and that was adressed on the forums as well...some folk seem to see a relationship as a good reason to go for the 'explicit' emotes. And that's something that doesn't have a place on a server, if you ask me.
My main char on another server went through the whole mill. She met a guy, fell in love, and when he gave her the key to his house, she insisted on a handfest first. (she's oldfashioned) They had a wonderfull feast in the city hall, and the ceremony was simply great to play out. But when they made ready to go to bed, meant our characters went to bed and we, players, would use the rest-time to talk in tells about RL issues, school, work. IG the couple had great times, but eventually they broke up, and my char never really got over it.

Whatever reasons behind a relationship IG are, I doubt there's a standard . I guess what I mean to say is, that this issue comes close to another thread.....that about clique-forming. (Not sure if that one's still on the forums, but I'm almost sure it was published AFTER the hacker-attack, so it should be in the RP corner, I think)

Not sure if this reply made any sense, but these are just some small thoughts I had.

I had noticed this thread some time back, and agree with Sarah, plenty has been said on both sides. I personally reserve romance to RL as I have to work hard enough at role-playing as it is. As a PNP DM, I did whatever I could to prevent romance from occurring as it invariably interrupted the campaign and caused issues between the players. I don't see that as being as big a problem in an on-line atmosphere as the overaching plot lines aren't significantly affected by two players becoming attached.

clique-forming

SP mentioned a clique-forming thread. I looked for it but can't seem to find it so would someone be so kind as to bump it if they know where it is?

Not sure this is the thread elion is referring to. It's an old one, and covers a number of topics such as cliques, sharing the stage, and including others in roleplay. A good read.

*nods to arch* That's the one. A pair of characters having a relationship might be concidered a mini-clique, right?

I don't think a couple would be considered a clique perse and even so, there is nothing wrong with having folks who have close kinship for one another more so than for others. It makes sense that some folks would gravitate naturally to each other (mages to mages rangers to rangers etc) We are not all best friends as players nor are our characters all best friends. We are all however a part of this community. Cliques and social circles become a problem when they become exclusive in a negative way. If the Blue Lagoon Adventuring party wants to go in a mining trip by themselves or lovers A & B want to go hunt alone and don't invite anyone else thats fine, its when they don't even acknowledge other folks that it becomes an issue. The important thing is to always remember how you would want to be treated in such situations by someone else and then treat folks accordingly. It is about mutual respect from everyone to everyone in the whole community regardless of whether they're your best playing buddy or someone who is brand new. and I'll go ahead and stop babbling before I turn this even more into a post that belongs on the other discussion and not on this one :)

Im gonna add my thoughts on this topic.

IC online romance should be avoided like the plague. YOU-> the player have no idea who is on the other end of the other PC. The minute a conversation corses that thresh hold from RP/Fantasy to something more, you are entering a world with RL LEGAL implications..if that person is a minor.

I approach such situations when forced upon kel as to ignore or not reply becuase i do not wish to further or encourage such behavior. I alos feel uncomfortable wen i am around others emotiong in sucha manner.

just my thoughts..
