I've been following some of the postings on this board and others I frequent, and I've noticed some things that really bother me. I've seen suggestions and comments posted that started with severe criticism of the way the Vast is run.

I look at this server as being invited into someone's house for a party. If I show up, kick the host's dog, call his baby ugly and try to rearrange his furniture, I'm not being a good guest. There are things I'd like to see happen to the Vast, myself, but I appreciate that these things are in the hands of our hosts. Just like I'm sure they appreciate that if they host a boring party, people won't come back. In the past, folks left because they didn't like the nature of the party, which is their right. I miss some of the folks who left the party, but I respect their decisions. Some folks have come back after long times spent at other parties, and I'm glad to have them back.

Also, there are old posts that cover topics that I see being brought up repeatedly. Major suggestion: go back and read the old posts when you have time. You'll see where we've come from and where we're going.

So, I'd like to suggest that maybe we can watch our posting behavior, because this is a party. We should be enjoying it.
You are absolutely right, though it is still viable to come up with critism but of course in a constructive manner.

Maybe everyone should be asked to read Apollos post on the subject... it is afterall a sticky in the general discussion

Re: Things I've noticed about suggestions/comments
I try to throw suggestions up that I think will improve the overall RP flavor of the Vast. I know that I have posted many, only a few have made it into the server it seems. This is good. Diamonds in the rough I suppose.

I hope that the DMs do not take any of these as a personal attack on the way the server is run. I have been very happy with the way things work in the Vast and look forward to it evolving further for the better.

I have, and others, posted alot of suggestions and encourage others to do so as well. I agree with the above posts that one should read past threads as well. And, keep in mind that the server is fairly new and has come a long way since it's creation.

I hope these suggestions are not taken in a personal manner as I truly believe that most intend improve the RP and game play in the Vast. Unfortunately, when one spends so much time and effort on something as AG, Taraxa, and others do, some of these suggestions may be taken as criticism. A fine line between I would think.

Anyway, keep it light and in the perspective that you are trying to help the Vast as a whole. I am certain you will be heard.

And...
I'm stealing a line here.... "Have Fun"
See i disagree with you GoatJagger. If you have something to say. Come out and say it. (refraining from profanity) The only reason people get worked up about it is because they care. If they didn't they would say nothing. General bitching and moaning is a time honored staple of discussion boards everywhere. The party comparison only works IMO to an extent. Yes we are playing party games at someone elses house but if i don't like playing "pin the tail on the donkey" i'm going to pipe up and say hey lets play something else.

I rarely take anything anyone says in forums or in chat or in even in game tells personally or 100 percent seriously. Too much of the intent and meaning is lost in the fact i am not stting face to face with that person having a discussion and its too easy to blow something that meant nothing out of porportion.
Is it? I must have missed that memo. I thought maybe we could set a more civilized example for the world, seriously (100%).General bitching and moaning is a time honored staple of discussion boards everywhere.

Re: Things I've noticed about suggestions/comments
Indeed. Of all the forums I've seen or posted on, this one has been the most polite and civilized. Let's try and keep it that way; if we get into fights here, it will be very hard to keep them out of RP. Keep in clean, folks.

If you have a comment or suggestion, ask them about it nicely and briefly, and don't repeat yourself or other people; the Search button, as AG said, is right up at the top of the screen. On a similar note, most people who are on these forums have been here long enough to have an idea of what vision the DMs have for their world (and it is their world, not our's; we play in it because we presumably enjoy it and because they let us) to know whether they like that vision or not. If someone doesn't like the way things are done, it's best to discuss it in private with a DM, and in a civilized manner. If they still don't like it, they can leave or live with it; I've seen people leave because they didn't like the way things were done on the Vast, some quite recently. I admit I have seen the DMs do some things that ticked me off or made me scratch my head, but I also know that I have a player's perspective of the world and they need to look at the big picture, so I may not understand their motives for every little thing they do. *shrug* That's the way it is, and I'm willing to put up with mild annoyances every once in a while, because playing here has been extreme fun for the most part.

Also, I second what Innuvindyl said; this has been covered before, in Apollo's sticky. All the sides laid themselves bare there, so if you've something to add to the discussion, I recommend you look through it.

Now, I didn't say "suck it up, folks." Of course, if you have a concern about something on the server or the board, you should speak up. However, it's the responsibility of the person trying to get their message across to take the time to write a reasonable constructive criticism (one that is well thought out and researched). In the IT industry, we have the acronym RTFM (read the freakin' manual). That applies here. You can read the server rules and past threads in the discussion board if you have something you want to suggest, to see if it hasn't been addressed before. Also, you shouldn't start out a criticism using some form of "this sucks ..." at the beginning. My reference to calling someone's baby "ugly" is in reference to the from of criticism on this board.

It's all about HOW you say it. That's my main point.
General bitching and moaning is a time honored staple of discussion boards everywhere.

-----

I have a couple of other hobbies, for which I joined relevant discussion boards. One board has elevated 'bitching and moaning' to an art form:

"This company's products suck! They don't care about us! They only put out this trash to make a buck!" etc.

Once I see a thread begin like this, I back out and read another one, because I realize it's not worth my time. It got so bad on that board, that they were forced to ban about a half dozen folks from posting on that board because of the overall negativity of the posts. Not something I'd like to see here.

I'm going to use the 'party' analogy, again. I go to a party and an acquaintance comes up to me and starts bitching about politics/the bean dip/the stereo system. At that point, I'm going to excuse myself and spend the rest of my time avoiding that person. I'm there to have fun. The complainer is there to complain. I say this because I've been the complainer, not realizing until too late how it made me look to others.

Amir used the phrase "have fun." I'd like to add "play nice", to this since that fits my idea of the main idea behind this thread.
