A Tale as told by Flynn Whelky - Minstrel, Troubadour and Scoundrel.
Gather round, gather round, pull up a chair and if me tale entertains you drop a couple coppers in me hat or better yet buy me pint of the good stuff.
Now I had just arrived in Vesper via merchant ship and needed to make a bit of quick exit. why I needed to make quick exit is a tale for another time - Ha we'll just say it has to do with a certain merchant captain and his daughter who looked a lot like the serving lass there *eyes chelie lewdly*
So seeing as how I needed to make a quick exit I took to road as the sun was setting and made for your fair dale. I had heard rumors of bandits but I am fleet of foot and got a little skill with the shank and club myself. Handy skills when you are used to have to be making quick exits *winks* so i figured I would chance it beside I had been hearing that some of these bandits are women and i;m thinking if worse comes to worse I can just turn on a bit of the old Flynn charm and *chelie walks by and flashes him a nasty glare* well heh i will leave that all to your own imaginations.
Now I cross the bridge and a nasty sort of fog is rolling in behind me. Really thick, gravy thick - yeah halfing I said gravy, look at him he's drooling *laughs* sort of fog, so i am pulling my cloak up tight around me shoulders and gripping me shank *pulls dagger out of his belt and sticks it point end into the table* a bit tighter thinking if I was a highwayman this is when I would strike.
So I am thinking this and all of sudden hear a commotion something fierce coming from up on the bluff and by Mystra's Marbles my heart jumps up in my chest like a halfing going for second portions. I am thinking Flynn you are in for it now there is bandits up there and they are going to beat me down and take the last two coppers I have to my name. Now one half of me is telling me to run but the other half is telling me to climb up the bluff and bit and see what all this commotion is.
Now I know what your thinking ? Your thinking old Flynn must be stupid. He should be only be thinking of turning right around and heading back to The Landing even if it means he will spend a night or two in the slammer but I am cursed I tell ya with a morbid curiosity. I know - I know you are thinking there is no way old Flynn climbed that bluff but I did, climbed right up and peeked my head over to see if I could get a view of what was going on
Now the fog is thick remember so you must be thinking how can Flynn be getting a view but as right as rain as soon as I peak my head over the edge a bit of fog clears and the moon light is spilling down out of sky lighting up the whole bluff like a halfling eyes when he sees a sweet roll.
So anyways . . . I can see this man in some fearsome helmet - that looks like he done beheaded a boar and then scooped out its thinking parts and placed it on his head - and a wicked looking blade that looks like it did the beheading. Now this fellow is surrounded by a big mob of nastiest looking cutthroats you have ever seen and it ain't going well for him. He is bleeding something fierce arrows sticking out from all over . . .
Now I am thinking he is done for . .no way out . . its dirtnap time then outta nowhere the biggest cat I had ever seen done hurtles into the mob - tearing out throats sending geysers of blood spilling everywhere *wipes face* got a little speckle on me still and allows this fellow - lets call him boarhead - to work himself out of that pack. He starts to retreat actually coming toward where old Flynn is peaking his head over the edge . . . and then from behind him I see a woman in black come out from a copse of trees and she begins a chanting. Now I know a bit about incantations and the such but this one i'd never heard before. The boarhead fellow seems to know its dangerous and so does his giant cat. Man the cat busts through that pack of cutthroats like a halfing . . .oh all right I've ribbed the poor haflings enough . .suffice it to say the cat makes a beeline for the chanting witch and leaps at her and then . . . Ka Blam !
The blast of heat that came outta that witches hands was like the fire of hells itself the last thing i see is the fellow, the group of bandits, and the giant cat just vanish in a burst of flame before the blast washes over the edge of the bluff and knocks old Flynn back onto the road. I hit me he head hard and was knocked clean out. I awoke the next morning still on the road, morning dew on my face and the headache like an ogre was in my head banging to get out. I climbed up the bluff but there weren't nothing left but burnt grass and no sign of the boar headed fellow, his cat or them cutthroats.
What's this ? None of you are believing old Flynn's tale ? You doubt what old Flynn says is true ? Look * take off his hat and rubs a naturally bald spot* I had hair here till the witches fire burned it clean off. No ? Still don't believe old Flynn. I got something that might be changing your minds.
*reaches in bag and pulls out Brokenmaw's helmet* This was the fellows helmet, it done fell on the road right next to old Flynn when I came too. Lean in close here. Closer c'mon lean in close or you won't be able to see it clear. Old Flynn will show you something that will make your stomach turn * slowly turns the helmet* , - I warn you those who are upset by the sight of blood might want to look away. Last warning you may not sleep right after seeing what is left of the poor fellow in here . . .
*drops helmet on the table suddenly, it clatters noisily, rolls around and turns up it is empty *
Ha you were thinking this fellows head were still in it weren't ya ?C'mon surely that is worth a copper. There we go , thanks kind sir, don't be shy, Old Flynn won't be mad if you throw a kings piece in the hat either. Thank you. Oh most generous. Most generous. . . too kind really
.Bar maid bring me a pint, nah make it two of the your best so old Flynn can wet his whistle he's just getting warmed up.
OOC taking a bit of break probably be back in a week or so with new character - per usual i - Brokenmaw - died agonizingly close to a next level and set a personal best for XP loss 7680 surpassing Redbeard's mark of 6000. this is not to say Brokenmaw will never be back after all old Flynn never found any bodies. . .
