Re: Reports of vermin activity
I thought it wise to report that a goblin war party was destroyed along the south road. The group included Hobgoblin, bugbear, a shaman that raised the dead, and others like archers and warriors.

This band was strong enough to kill off a good number of bandits.
Re: Reports of vermin activity
Good folk, reports of encounters with Trolls have appeared. Within the past tenday, while searching out these reports, a party of folks from the Dale encountered and defeated a war band of the vermin two leagues South of the Dale. The war band was led by one of the militant vermin skilled in archery, along with several of the bear-like vermin and many lesser vermin. The militant vermin bore a banner bearing the symbol of their primary patron, Maglubiyet. There is the possibility that the vermin's attacks upon the Dale have taken on the aspect of a 'crusade.' Let us be vigilant for more such signs of the 'Power' among the vermin, good folk, and report it to other members of the 'campaign' against the Warrens.
Master faelar...
While i was out showing cain where i had encountered the troll a tenday ago we were attacked by what i could only describe as a "pack" of goblins... after having killed them did we only find the mangled remains of a poor stag... The vermin didnt even bother to butcher the animal.. instead the wounds evident were like thoes of feral dogs... a less organized tribe of vermin perhaps..
should you have questions seek me out..
*the man closes the book after the ink has set and slides it across the bar to the other end, nodding to budric as he looks up in supprise* My thanks..
Re: Reports of vermin activity
As she approaches the bar, Ani catches the barkeeps eyes, and gives a slight nod toward the seemingly ever-popular book (at least to the barkeep's experience), and he hands it over to her. She peruses it for a few moments before penning her own entry in a flowing common script:

"A very odd thing happened a few nights ago, as I made my way from Vesper back to Dale. I encountered no one. No bandit, no goblin, not even a solitary rat, on my journey.....

Very odd, is it not?"

At the bottom of the entry is a small drawing of two arrows, slanted toward each other with their heads touching, and a raven's feather lying across them, the whole picture forming the letter "A".

Re: Reports of vermin activity
Nada, dressed in her flowing Collegium robes, descends the stairs from the sleeping rooms of the Wayfarer. Her right hand glides smoothly down the rail at the side as she looks around slowly, a drowsy look to her hair.

Moving gracefully accross the floor she approachs the bartender. "Budrich, do you have anything warn to drink, something to start the day? Maybe some fruit juice?" <NPC action / dialogue edited out> She gently shakes her head indicating no and perhaps shaking some sleep away as well. "I have water thank you. Perhaps a goblet?" <NPC action / dialogue edited out>

Her interest perked, she looks up sharply from the goblet on the bar. "I am a member of the Collegium Arcanorum, as Fealar is. Or was until recently. Why do you ask?" she answered reaching into her pack and removing a canteen, she begins to casually pour water into the goblet.

<NPC action / dialogue edited out>After looking at the bartender a moment, she opens the journal and sipping at the goblet, begins to read.

*some time later"
She slowly closes the journal a thoughful look in her face. <NPC action / dialogue edited out> "Very interestng Budrich. I will continue this as Faelar had I think. Let me know if someone writes in it or has questions about it. I am here enough or have someone run a note to the Collegium Lyceum in Vesper Landing", She reaches into her pouch and places two gold pieces on top of the journal then nodding she turns to leave.
Reports of vermin activity
*Nada takes the journal on the counter and twirling it around grabs the pen and turning to a blank page, begins to write*

Two nights past I in a walk about the west glade did come upon two fallen men that I did not know. On the other side of the small wood patch was a large host of goblins. Many of the larger type and one with a crude sling. I was able to slay them and then move the bodies to the graveyard, one at a time.

Upon my return after the second body had been laid to rest, I found a large goblin not usual in the west glade only slightly injured. I suspect that it was this larger goblin that slew the two men, perhaps by suprise. His kind I have only seen in the hidden glen to the north before now.

It is my thoughts that the goblin presence in the west glade is on the rise, at least after the setting of the sun.
Re: Reports of vermin activity
*an entry in large block letters written with a firm hand*

Four of us were passing the eve on the south tower, Lyrian, Celad, Kail and myself. Near to dawn, we were ambushed by a smallish warparty of goblins. There were two in metal armor, one with a bow and the leader with a long sword. These were accompanied by a half score of lesser goblins. They charged us from the treeline west of the tower and caught us somewhat unaware as our attention had been drawn east by a lone slinger.

We dispatched this group fairly quickly and regrouped. I dispatched Lyrian to recruit any others that might be available to aid us, for I thought it wise to follow their trail back and discover if this was a rouge group out to make a name, or part of a larger plot. We added the elven mage, Aramil to our group and set out WSW following their trail. A league east of the road is where things started getting strange.

We finished off several stragglers that were wandering around. As we approached the hills to the west, a final pair surprized us. One threw a small object. It was dark, and no one but me saw him make the throw. I was unable to see what it was, but the result was most unexpected. Whatever it was created a very large area (bigger than the wellyard at the Wayfarer) of a green gas. I was able to hold my breath and dispatch the greenskin, but the gas incapacitated several of the others. Celad was stunned and unable to act for a long time. He was sick for some time after until he threw up. Fortunatly, the gas seemed to have no long term effects, but it could really swing an engagement in their favor if they are producing it and arming their forces with more of it. Consider yourselves warned.

If this were not grim enough news, we continued west under the dark eves of the deep wood. We were engaged by a few minor goblins, but quickly encounted four archers ranged around one of the deep drops in the forest floor. It was a dangerous situation, but the group performed well. They stood their ground and we were able to kill all the goblins with darts and bowfire. I had been struck several times and was tending to my wounds when a goblin shaman appeared and started summoning his vile powers.

I ordered the group to flee back to the east. Kail led the others east. Celad did not hear me as he stooped over a fallen goblin and I stopped to spur him on. As I reached his side, a deep and inky blackness decended around us. I could see nothing and Celad yelled out about being blind. In truth, I feared I was as well.

I seized Celad by the arm and gave him a rough shove in the easterly direction I'd been moving. After a dozen steps or so we staggered out of the blackness. I have no doubt that the darkness was a product of the shaman's vile sorcery. We met the others and I spured them to continue east. I feared pursuit and ducked behind a section of cliffside thinking to ambush the shaman if he followed and to buy time for the others. After counting to 10 I lept from cover and found.... nothing. I turned east and caught up to the others.

We briefly discussed our encounter and then I pushed for a return for the Dale. None of us were in top condition and I feared further conflict would lead to a dire situation. We moved NE and after a short distance we came across the body of an unfortunate near a stand of trees. We lowered our guard for a moment as we approached to retrieve the body and take it back to the Dale. We were only a long bowshot from the west gate and that nearness and the thoughts of saftey it caused almost cost us dearly.

As I stooped to lift the body, I heard the chanting of a goblin and recognized what was happening. The shaman had returned, we were all huddled around the body, and he was summoning the same spell so often used by the shamans in the caves to stun with a noise as loud as thunder. I dropped the mans arm and yelled for everyone to run as I sprinted toward the chanting.

What happened next is like a blur. I was yelling for the others to run as I tried to draw the shaman off. The others would have none of it. They followed my lead and refused to leave my side. At the time I was angry, but after I saw the wisdom of their action. For hours I had been lecturing them about teamwork. Fighting and working together. To my shame, they remembered the lesson far better than I.

Each played to their strengths, some in close with me, others at a distance with spell and bow. The fight was long and fearsome. The goblin summoned a cloud of flashing lightning to hover over our heads, a dark feeling of doom which made our strikes slow and weak. His skin was like the gnarled bark of the oldest oak and we could smell the enchantments that surrounded him. He chanted constantly, sometimes reading from scrolls such as Vincent is apt to use.

It took a fair time to fell him, but my teammates dropped him finally into the grass, a bloody heap. It was then we got what I consider the biggest shock. Lyrian removed three items from the body that shook me to the core. One was a complete map of the Dale and the surrounding area. Second was a scroll which Aramil took possesion of. He said it would cause darkness such as I experienced in the forest and again during the fight against the shaman. Third was a blank scroll the shaman carried.

I do not know what to make of all this. I record it here in its fullness so that others might better learn from our efforts. I expect there are several lessons contained herein for those who chose to learn them.
Rubbing his wrist, he rereads his very long entry, nodding to himself at various points in the narrative. Satisfied with his effort, he closes the book and finishes his drink. Putting a generous tip on the table, he returns the book and heads from the Wayfarer, a troubled look on his face*

*Paul leans back and swigs again from the mug Chelie has thoughtfully refilled for him as he worked. Rubbing his wrist, he rereads his very long entry, nodding to himself at various points in the narrative. Satisfied with his effort, he closes the book and finishes his drink. Putting a generous tip on the table, he returns the book and heads from the Wayfarer, a troubled look on his face*

Re: Reports of vermin activity
Celad lumbers down the staries of the Wayfarer nodding slightly to its patrons as he makes his way to the book. Heafting the book open he notices Pauls entry and furrows he brow as he begins to read...

After several minutes he raises an eyebrow and takes up the pen...

In a quick but readible hand:

Pauls account if far better than mine could have hoped to be. For those who study majiks and the like it should also be said that at one point the tiny shaman threw a ball of blue light from some distance hitting me squarely in the chest. I was quite confused for a few moments and coming to realized those around me had been effected by the attack as well.

I took a few of the Crimson folks back to the spot a few days later. I believe the party included Rory, Caine, Vincent and myself. We could find nothing left behind by the shaman save a still high number of gobs. I had five of them jump me as I entered the glade and would not be here had Caine not been a few paces behind me.

Celad

rereading his words his brow furrows again as he slams the book closed and tromps out the wayfarer door with a huff.

*a small figure in blood stained hyde armor limps to the bar, pulls himself up to a standing position on top of a barstool, and in slightly strained common asks for the "greenae b-ook" and pulls a pen and ink from a pouch on his belt. After straining to make sense of some of the other notes, and completely giving up on those with bigger words, he scrawls a message in a blank spot at the bottom of the page*
Undead to the west...
*a man in bright robes and a warm smile on his face aproaches budrich curiously*
Is there a tome here, that others have marked events to the west in? *he asks quielty..*
I write here after discovering this tome of information concerning events of the west and tales of a campaign of seasons ago against the Warrens goblins.
I am Lucias Cuthbert in service of Lathander. I have journeyed several times along the grass lands known as the fringe. Twice in my journeys Undead were seen in service of the goblin stewards that walks with them. The second encounter also bore the presence of a Shaman of their race.
In both events the dale was successful in quelling the abominations and those that sought their company but it is an occurrence I have not seen before within these pages outside of the cavers to the west.
