Roleplayer of the Month
I've tried to stay my fingers, but alas, I am weak.

The Roleplayer of the Month award is, in itself, the gratified opinion of the very community with which we deliberate whether or not it serves. Just as with any election, not all possible candidates are considered every time by each person, because each person does not interact with every possible candidate. The idea is for YOU to submit who YOU think did a great job.

The award is an individual award, so thus does not -directly- benefit the community as a whole. However, on the flip side of that coin, the award serves as a motivation for roleplay, as well as being a big confidence boost for the nominees and ultimately the winner. Speaking from personal experience, the few nominations I've received have stimulated pockets of pride in myself and my character. I know not all characters are nominated, but instead of taking this as insult, it should be looked at as motivation: motivation to better entrench one's self into the server and make his or her character known to its inhabitants.

The 'custom item' offered is icing on the cake, I think; just knowing that one's character is well accepted and praised should be enough of a reward.

My two cents.
Be careful with doing that. Though i play a paladin, sometimes it pissed me off to the point of logging out. Some of the things that people say and do IC will do that, if you are totally IC. So try to keep some separation between you and your Character. you will get less headaches that way
Another two cents...

I think the RPotM award is a positive thing. Not just the award itself, but just being nominated is a nice way to give that positive feedback to another player.

I do on occasion "tell" a player that they just did a great job RPing. But, it is also a nice thing to see one of your own characters nominated.

If the RPotM award seems like a big popularity contest, then perhaps we should just have a forum for positive feedback or something. Maybe just post positive RP experiences that we have had with certain characters. I don't know, just an idea.

For example...

Hey Inverse.. You did a great job playing Luna last night. Lydia thoroughly enjoyed her company. Very refreshing and different. Well played.

That's all it may take.
Re: Rookie of the Month/RP discussion/Sharing the stage
I'll do a bit on sharing the stage at the risk of sounding hypocritical, as I am growing increasingly annoyed at some others over this. I'll start by saying that one of the reasons I'm posting about this is because I've done it before, so don't think I'm unaware.
Firstly, and most importantly, is the exclusion of other players. There are many ways this exclusive mindset can be expressed: keeping some players, but not others (usually those allowed are old friends of your character) from joining expeditions, and travelling parties, talking over or just acting blind to people trying to participate in a discussion between you and your friends, etc. I can't think of all of them off the top of my head; there are plenty. This goes hand-in-hand with the clique mindset; people who only want to RP with their friends and barricade themselves and their characters away from everyone else because they don't think it to be worth their time.
By far the most annoying and widespread practice I've seen is characters ignoring people who aren't their buddy. Corvus is blunt, quiet, suspicious and oftentimes antisocial, but he does his best to give each and every person who approaches or passes a sharp glance or nod, and I've seen many supposedly nicer characters acting as though these same people don't exist. This is clearly OOC — no character could realistically be blind and deaf to every person except the one they're talking to — and the mindset it expresses, and the quality of RP it demonstrates, reeks heavily. Occasionally I'll be so swamped with people talking to me that I have to turn my full attention as a player to them, but this is rare, and if I calm down and take everything one step at a time, it's a lot easier to keep my RP from narrowing its focus to a small group of people. There's just no excuse for people doing this regularly, simply because they don't want to be torn away from their conversation; face it, things happen, threats are made, dead bodies are dropped at your character's feet, and if you don't want your character to be distracted by these things, go somewhere private to have your whisper session.
I have less to say on excluding people from people's parties and expeditions. This is more IC, and as such, expect it to be treated that way. OOC exclusion will, if you will excuse the language, piss off other players, and IC exclusion will piss off other characters, which is potentially much more hurtful to your character than OOC disgust and hostility that can't be expressed. This can be done quite unintentionally; I almost did it last night, when Adriana and Corvus went off on a patrol. We were just about to leave, when I realized that Valens, Kashia, and Robin had not been asked to come, so I glanced between the three of them and voiced an invitation. (Of course, I found out at that point from the responding emotes that all three were pretty spaced out and uninterested, but I did at least get emotes in response.) Before you go out with your friends, ask yourself if it would be IC to bring people you don't necessarily know as well, and if it is at all possible, let them come. Learning more about unfamiliar characters is just as much fun as being with people you know well, and it will provide more interesting interaction for everyone in the group — not just you. I would also like to point out that the people who are currently established players here, when they were new, depended on such invitations into the ranks of their older peers to establish themselves. It's grossly parasitic and selfish in a disturbingly OOC manner to deny the current newbies these same opportunity.
I have committed a lot of these aforementioned RP crimes myself before, and I will willingly admit it, and that once I realized it, I've done my best to solve it; however, it only becomes more frustrating when I see others who make such things a common practice, don't make an effort to escape it, and may not even be aware of what they're doing. I have said earlier "you know who you are"; do these people really not know who they are? I had hoped just the existence of this thread would increase awareness, but that's not happening. In fact, some of the people who are saying "oh man, yeah, that's such a bummer" are the very same people who do these things regularly, and far from being helpful, some of these posts are hypocritical. Maybe these people don't care, but other people are aware of this irony as well, and it lowers everyone's opinions of them as players. Should I tell these people privately what they're doing? Previously, I haven't wanted to be rude or accusatory.
... So. That's my two cents. Sorry if it's confrontational; I don't want to accuse people, I just want to open their eyes to what's going on, and what they might be doing.

First off, a very good post Cafall. Insightful, and unfortunately I can see myself in some of those descriptions as well
*nods* Yes, the problem of new characters by good old friend players... One of the problems and reasons I think, that Ananiki has come to actually know many from the same pool as Innuvindyl is that these players might know ooc that beneath the heavy scowling and snorting is another layer of the character, the layer you want to explore, were as new players might not bother to explore an anti-social/rude character when there are so many other friendly characters.
Good points.

However I don't feel that it's necessarily feasible or fair, or appropriate, to certain other players, to simply come along and always "inject" oneself into what may well be a developing plotline.

Some of which, naturally, tend to be exclusive.

This is of course a problem on a server with a markedly smaller player-base than some...
Re: General RP
Well, now... how does one necessarily "inject" oneself into a plotline? If their character is naturally extremely inquisitive, it will happen almost naturally, and doubly so if that inquisitive fellow is good at sneaking. I know that Rorry knew alot more than most people thought he knew about people. I feel free to say this now that he is dead. He was always sneaking about and learning more about others characters that way.

As to those whose characters are not very apt to insert themselves into a situation that is not their own: You are out of character. Get back in character!

Re: General RP
Said "injection" occurs when a group is clearly having an indepth discussion and someone begins shouting, 'What?! What are you talking about?! What's going on here?!' or, perhaps, people assume ooc knowledge ic and try to force their character into another's story. I won't name names, but there have been occassions when a character would assume certain things about Valens, clearly paying no attention to his character history, which is posted in the appropriate forum, and making up some odd back story that he hoped I'd coordinate with. Also, I've witnessed characters forcing their presences on others, trying to wedge their way in to another character's life, when the imposed upon party really has no interest in said interaction. I won't recount any specific incident, but an example would be creating a character with amazing similarities to another intentionally, or somehow having clairvoyant knowledge of another. This could all qualify as "injection."

There's nothing wrong with stepping into a conversation, but there's etiquette to remember when doing so. If two people were sitting alone, whispering, who, in reality, would walk up and plop down next to them? If four or so people wore serious, dour expressions while conversing, who would jump in the midst of them and emit, "What are you talking about?! Tell me, tell me!" Now, if your character has eight charisma, rudeness can be prevalent, and above circumstances could make sense; I suppose low intelligence could qualify the above as well. *shrug*
It needs to be noted that just as in real life, one will not know everything that is going on with everyone, and it's much more enjoyable to go through the proper avenues of meeting and learning of people than to blast a whole in their plot and dive through it.
