Appearance:
When meeting Berik you will see a man in his mid 20’s with short neatly kept brown hair, a warm smile, and blue eyes that sometimes appear to pierce right into the inner being of any who attracts his gaze. He has a very muscular and athletic frame that stands just above 6’-0” tall. His body appears finely tuned to wield any weapon that we would so choose to pick up and call his own but his most trusted weapon is that of a sturdy long sword, bearing no special features other than the markings of conflict, it rests comfortably in the sheath that is strapped in its rightful place upon his back. Upon further inspection one would find that scars of varying types and sizes scattered across his body and most notably one long scar seemingly from a blade that runs across his left chest down from his shoulder, across his heart, to his sternum.
Personality:
Berik has a generally good disposition and outlook on life. He enjoys having fun, laughing, and just general horseplay as much as the next person but because of his chosen path in life these characteristics sometimes lay buried deep within his self. He has the gift of making acquaintances easily because of his good nature but truly befriends few. However when a true friend is made... Berik becomes a formidable ally, but for a friend to betray him would be most unwise.
History:
Berik was raised by wonderful parents in a small farming village not big enough for maps to mention. His childhood was uneventful at best and very poor. Berik was a strong boy growing stronger by the day and year as he helped plow and sow the crops in the fields with his father. Years passed and as he grew older everything remained the same. Berik is now 20 years old and one day his parents decided they were going to make a trip to Waterdeep. Now they didn’t go to the city often much for the reasoning that they did not have any gold to spend, but this was after harvest and time for their trip. Berik did not usually accompany them into the city but he was interested this time and felt he could tag along. This small trip after harvest proved to be a turning point in young Beriks life. As his parents were off shopping, he stood at a merchants stand admiring the weapons on display. Oh how he would love to own a blade so fine he thought to himself. Berik loved to spar, but for the most part his sparring partner was an old tree in his back yard and his sword was… well it was an old stick from that particular tree. As Berik was standing there an old man approached him from behind, as Berik admired the shiny swords, and calmly appraised the young mans features. Berik had developed into a specimen of potential ability and his clothing pointedly stated that he was not of wealthy decent. The old man approached Berik with the belief that Berik would be a great addition to his… family.
He invited Berik to a house on the outside of town where there were many very shady men and women relaxing, drinking ale, and bragging tales of their last “job”. Where the naïve Berik had been invited was one of the most prominent thieves guilds in the region. Berik noticed this and turned to leave, only to be stopped by the old man that brought him here holding out the longsword that Berik had been admiring. It was free to Berik but only if he would help the guild. Berik was of course tentative but the offers and lore of riches and fame were too strong for the poor young man to pass up. He accepted and promised he would return the next day. He went home very happy but ran into very unhappy parents because he left them so abruptly earlier that day. He told them about his experience and that he would be able to get more gold for the family and help them greatly, but his father knew that he spoke of the thieves guild and forbid him from returning. After hearing this Berik went into a blind rage not understanding what was wrong with wanting to help his family. That night he left. But he meant not to return.
In his first months with the guild he trained under the incumbent weapons master. They together fine tuned Berik into an efficient and very dangerous fighter. Berik began going by nicknames while moving up thru the guild, his most popular being a literal translation of his last name Damon-Griefer; Demon Claw. Berik mused at the name but those under him knew that he could do what he wanted when he wanted to do it as few would challenge his opinion and did not dare anger him even though he would accept their thoughts.. they did not know that. For the next five years Berik would never return home. He worked himself to the bone, completing jobs contracted to the guild from common escorting and caravan guard to assassinations and collection of debts owed to the guild master himself. Life was definitely not as Berik remembered, he remembered life on the farm, sparring with the old oak, now his life is that of darkness and pain. He has learned to inflict pain in so many ways he cannot even begin to count but he is happy even though he has not one friend. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a friend again he often thought. One day while on a routine caravan escort with some of his guild mates, they were attacked by a rival guild while on route to the city of Vesper. Berik fought bravely but in the fray was struck down by a blade, receiving a wound to his left chest that opened a gash from his left shoulder, down across his heart, to his lower sternum. His guild mates drove away the rival guild members but coldly left one of their own, Berik, to die. He would have surely died if it wouldn’t have been for another merchant caravan following behind no more than a mornings time. They picked him up in his unconscious state and brought him to Vesper so he could get some rest. A local resident was able to take Berik in and nurse him back to health. Berik gratefully thanked the lady who took him in and gave her all the gold he had to his name, which wasn’t very much. He took north from vesper in search of a life. His thoughts drifted home to his parents but also to the guild. His life until now has been about fighting, killing, and making money… but there had also been good times as well. He walked until he came upon a small town, one that reminded him much of his home. One that looked like it would be a nice place to stop and relax, after all, no one here truly knows what Berik Damon-Griefer is capable of. Maybe he can get life off to a new start. That place was Dragon Dale.
