Just how safe is it to travel the road to Vesper?

Just how safe is it to travel the road to Vesper?
I ask, because I very frequently travel to and from Vesper almost every day. I've been reading some of the older posts, and I see frequent references to bandits along the roads?

Now, as my character is only a level 2, I'm beginning to wonder if I've been taking my life into my hands, when I leave on a trip to Vesper. I've 'only' ever travelled to Vesper during the day, as I've seen even the more seasoned players can't be dragged out at night even kicking and screaming. [grins]

So, the one time, I 'was' caught outside town at night, I was understandably afraid. [smiles] I misjudged the time, and found myself only to the halfway mark to Dragon Dale when night fell. So, I carefully made my way to Dragon Dale, all the while looking from side to side, jumping at every little sound. But...I saw nothing. Well, nothing aside from the usual. I didn't see any bandits. I did see one goblin grunt, off the side of the road, lurking in the trees, but I see that one during the day too, and as long as I stick to the opposite side of the road, it's none the wiser to me.

I did have one pretty bad scare. As I passed the grunt, I saw a bit further up the road a goblin slinger, off the road, lurking near the painted trees. That one, I not only stuck to the opposite side of the road, I went around a rock/cliff outcroping to keep my distance. And I passed it with no trouble. Still, kinda spooky. [smiles sheepishly]

Now, the first time I went out during the day, and made it, I thought I'd been very fortunate. But it seems every time I go out, I only see the same goblin. Is it because I'm sticking totally to the road? I also stealth to Vesper. But my skill level isn't good. I have a few points in both hide and move silently, and I'm a hin, so could that be the reason? I don't go near the enemies I see. And I stealth without fail, never coming out into the open (never deactivating stealth mode while outside).

Since I've been playing, I've only had to 'actually' kill one enemy to continue my trip to Vesper, and that was a lone bandit, patrolling the Land's Drop area. You know the little incline/ramp that goes down. I notice a bandit is usually lurking about. He looked like he was out in the open though, and not trying to sneak about. I had my familar with me, as a second set of eyes (in guard mode). And It was down the ramp with me, when the bandit came out of the fog. I ran quickly up hoping it hadn't seen me, but it did see my familiar.

I ordered it to fly upwards and away and I ran up the ramp, out of site and hid. (I unsummoned it). I then watched him walk back into the distance, and watched where he went. he seemed to be patrolling that piece of road looking for victims.

So, I decided to chance a fight, since I was close to Vesper. I didn't have my familiar, so I was worried. I cast a spell to protect me should he get close, then waiting for him to start his walk back towards the ramp. I popped up and cast a sleep spell at him. I normally just daze an enemy, but without my familiar I didn't think I could defeat him with just rays of frost. [admits]

His eyes glazed over, and he fell face first onto the dirt road. I quickly ran down the ramp towards him, with my dagger in hand. Well, that was the end of that bandit. I did this at first level, so I was understandably proud, but would not want to repeat this by myself. Maybe with others.

But I've heard that these bandits use stealth, so are their more 'on' the road, and I've just been very lucky not to notice them, but also they just didn't notice me as I was in stealth mode? Are those that stick to the road, in general, less likely
to run afoul of something bad?

Of have I just been 'extremely' lucky?

Any insight anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated. [smiles]
Re: Just how safe is it to travel the road to Vesper?
The bandit was probably in stealth, but in broad daylight there's a considerable penalty to that check, so you most likely just spotted him. As far as not encountering anything to or from Vesper, yes, it helps that you've been sticking to the road, but you're also getting very lucky

Travel by day is always the safest, but it sounds like you have been fairly lucky. At night, there is a chance you might run into a particularly tough group that would appear out of the darkness right on top of you. Your encounter with a lone bandit was with the least powerful of the various bandits that you might see.

Oooo! Now I'm nervous about leaving Dragon Dale!

The usual reason I leave to go to Vesper is to explore all the buildings (as I've not been in a few).

But primarily I go there to shop! [smiles] The Golden Needle just has prettier clothes! [laughs] And since I make money through the little quests, to afford the clothes, that's another reason I go there.

I will have to rethink my trips from now on. [grins]

I think maybe I had an easier time, perhaps because the way'd been cleared before hand. On one occassion, while walking to Vesper, I found a body of a dead goblin lying in the middle of the road, and a second time I found the lone bandit lying face down in the dirt no doubt put there by some players much more capable then I. [grins]

Still, I think I will stay in town, only leaving alone when absolutely needed.
Oh and remember to avoid travelling with Ruben like the plague. Especially along the road to Vesper.

Going anywhere with him increases your chances of ambush or death by about 200 percent.
You're lucky you didn't run into a witch and some bandits directly on one of the bridges, like Karn and Glaisne did. Rough fight that day.
....That sorceress was evil. Fireballs.. *Shuddertwitch*

And I'd say that you've been getting lucky as well. I've been finding bandits regularly on the road during the day, although it is generally just a lone bandit. (I tend not to travel much further south than the four towers. Elrith only visits the Landing sometimes.)
However, much of the time it's a bandit with a sling that I find. They can be much nastier than the run-of-the-mill bandit, especially if you're an unseasoned adventurer.
Elrith will also never forget her first major run-in with bandits on the road. ....We finished them, but the group I was with crawled away from that one. *Grins*
After having my giggling fit of a bandit being ambushed by a furfoot jumping out of a bush and doing a quick snicker-snack, ending the notorious life of "One Eye Sleepless Joe", I was able to finally come to my composure for a moment.
So, who wants to organize regular experienced escorts to and from The Landing for our less experienced adventurers? I can think of a few "obsessive about protecting the innocent" paladins, and probably some "it's my job to keep the wilds safe from evil" rangers who should be up to the task....
