Well, this is quite a thread. I'll try and do my best not to reiterate other's points, or be too controversial about all this...

On Natham. I always thought it was quite cool to have a necromancer character on the server, and at first it was cool; Natham being banned from the Ranger Camp was interesting, and then the events which led to a true hatred between Corvus and Natham unfolded: Natham trying to raise a dead necromancer, coaxing Tolwyn, Gideon and a half-orc (Jurkilla) into the swamps, Corvus following secretly, Natham marooning them all shortly after Corvus showed himself, etc. etc... still, eventually it became boring to RP with Natham, because he was more of a schoolyard bully, except he couldn't push anyone around, and in any case he wasn't doing anything that actually had anything to do with his god that I saw. I may be wrong, but I can't think of a single time that Natham actually did something pertaining to necromancy since the Evanna incident; after a while I decided to just ignore Natham at the risk of being OOC, because it was so dumb to rag on an obviously evil person who wasn't doing much of anything. No offense, pcpaf, but it became boring; the murder of Ruben was fun, but not enough material to do much on. I think there is little Natham can do in the same vein as what he's been doing. There might be something left to be explored if you switch angles, but as his survivability chances are decreasing rapidly, it's probably a moot point.

As for the complaints I'm seeing about the Vast as a whole. Firstly, I haven't a clue why you're posting such criticism in this thread. The ties are oblique and almost nonexistant; move it elsewhere, where we can address it separately. In any case... you will see a lot of relaxing by the well, and few people poking around outdoors for a while. The war is over, in most people's minds, and they want to relax while they can. Other people, such as Corvus, think the notion of it being over is rather naive; I plan to at least go out and scout the Mhyrrwood once and a while, with friends if possible, and much of the reason I'm hanging back so far is because I'm afraid the DMs would take it the wrong way.

I have also noticed a lot of the locations aren't used. The Wayfarer gets little clientele anymore, I doubt the Rough and Tumble ever had any; the Ranger Camp has spurts of population every once in a while, but we don't have many dedicated, established Rangers or Druids at the moment, and I see it as being dead for a good long while, unfortunately. There are many other places one can go that most people never explore, especially in the River Vesper Landing and the Druid Grove, but as I have said, most people stick to the well for some reason. If you want that to change, you'll have to change it yourself; go somewhere different and stick around for a while, explore places with friends. There's a lot more to every area than you might think, and there are loads of RP tools scattered around if you're imaginative enough to use them; if you're lucky, a DM might swing 'round and make things even more interesting (hats off to Psilax's habit of possessing random NPCs and just chatting with people, which is an addition I greatly enjoyed ever since he came here and haven't tired of). The creativity starts with the players; no one can force you to try new things, and if you're willing to go the extra step, you may just set a trend.

I realize the topic of this thread has more than likely skittered way off course. I agree with Cafall that it is up to the players to go adventure and find different areas and it is up to us take the extra steps and set the new trends. That being said .. I think all of us having the knowledge of the consequences (mainly death) to our decisions to run willy nilly through the wilds adventuring and that can hold some back whether we admit to it or not. Also with the majority of characters being of low levels, the exception being the veterans, there is little exploring due to the ease that death can be exacted on them. There are not always many on the server and the world has so many areas that of course people are going to look for someone else to interact with.. that being the starting point... the well. This is just my opinion... i just felt i should add a thought to this topic. Thank you for reading my ramble. *smiles*
Travelling into Kellin's Deep, or the Uplands, is quite a bit different than taking a trip to Vesper and actually staying to roleplay there a while. Trips into the wilderness should be taken with care; it's nice to have an experienced ranger with you if you want to know what's in the area before you encounter it, for example, and you need plenty of supplies, etc. There's always the risk of death. However, going somewhere you know will be safe in the end can be taken on more casually, and that's my point. The goblins outside the gate don't prevent you from having a drink in the Rough and Tumble, or the Wayfarer, instead of sitting around by the well.

Actually, that is not accurate. You joined the server On June 15, 2003. There are other regular players who were there well over a month before that.

Quote:
Giant spiders don´t get spawned in the spider cave. So a DM must have put it in there.

Don't expect areas to be static all the time. There are times we may leave something tougher in an area where any player may not expect it, just to break up the monotony - surprise! The giant spiders in that cave were placed at dead ends, and anyone travelling to them would have cleared the cave behind themselves, thereby leaving an open escape route.

Nothing was left behind by accident from any event.

Wow, didn't realize how early in the Vast's life, I got into it. I'm not sure, but I think I started in July.

My comment on this thread is...
-yeah, there should be a place for evil (or just less than good) people to hang out... and I figured it was in the works already so didn't worry about it. Problem with that is... how do you prevent the good from laying siege to it, just like they do the bandit camp, or the bugbears, etc.
-playing a subtle character of any sort is very hard, not just the evil kind. Do to the limitations of the game, subtlety is hard to accomplish. You have to be a clever player. Hearing someone who knows, say that there are evil people all around, serving as upstanding members of the community, living side-by-side with everyone else makes me think... "who does Lugdush deal with, that might be a mole/poisoned dagger in the dark?" And I have to say, to those people... TELL ME!!!... no seriously, kudos to you, for pulling it off.
-Everyone needs a hero, and everyone needs an enemy. Much of the world shares an enemy in Osama Bin Laden, but there are those that support him. And he uses those allied to him quite affectively. He is a very big, evil person, and there is nothing subtle about that, in the eyes of much of the world (on the flip-side, he is a very great leader to his followers and they would die willingly for him). Natham, while not on a level with Bin Laden, is of that sort. He is worthy of all the hate that the "good" folk around dish out... because he acted in a way that put himself in that position. I am not just talking about one incident with a spider (and no, I wasn't there either). When Natham allied himself with the bandits, simply because they were interested in the bounty he offered, that was dangerous (to the best of my knowledge, PK doesn't apply to NPCs ). That made him dangerous, because it was no longer one man (even a powerful one like Natham) against the rest... is was suddenly one force against another. Granted it was a tenuous relationship and eventually fell apart when the common goal went away (but isn't that usually the way with those sort of alliances?)... but the potential for mass mayhem was there, merely getting it's surface scratched.

Well, I've rambled on long enough... time to get some sleep.
To Corvus: Hey, now, Rorry went down to the Rough fairly often! He was a fan of Orc's Blood Ale. =P Still I completely agree with you. The main problems with the well being the gathering place are that
1) It is a large open space in the starter town and you need tokens to start anywhere else meaning you'll be there after a reset anyway.
2) Vesper is too big for the number of people allowed on the server. I personally feel that a full 22 players are on the server in Vesper at once, Vesper will continue to feel empty.
3) People like to meet near exit areas. This makes the well ideal. Note that when leaving vesper everyone meets up near the farmer's house.

I'm tired and so am not thinking of the other reasons that I wanted to express when I read Corvus's post.
I do want to say that any that stayed with Rorry visited most taverns and had a good time, I might add, if that isn't too presumptuous. I think all contributed to that enjoyment.

Regarding the Rough and Tumble: This isn't so popular partially because there aren't too many orc fighters out there, apparently, it is not close to the well -and- it has very little space for large groups. It -does- have good atmosphere, in my opinion. It seems like the kind of dive in which a shady deal would be made or where adventurers would go for a quick drink before heading back out to adventure in short order. Note how many people(NPCs) are in such a small place. It makes it feel a bit more -alive- that way.

Regarding strongholds and other such module changes: I really believe that any character that reaches 10 or above should automatically be considered by the DM to create a stronghold of his own. Of course factors in the consideration would include: wealth, prestige, type of stronghold, character history (would this character actually build such a thing?) and location.
Characters of lower levels that the DM believes may qualify for a stronghold in spite of of the PC's character level, should, of course be possible. Whether Natham would qualify for something like that I could not say, as it is DM's prerogative, as always.

I have been around the Vast since it's early days. I have seen what it has become and am very impressed with the effort that it's creators put in. There is a very loyal player base here that any new player can become a part of. It takes time and effort. And of course, good roleplay.

By the way AG, I am curious to know my start date. I believe it to be May 03. I do have many logins (one for each char). Perhaps Amir'syl or just Amirsyl was my first. Call me a curious little elf.
